TOMI NO OKA WINERY Bijou Noir

2020.04.20

Hi, everyone.

This time, I will introduce unique and interesting wine.
It is “Suntory Tomi-no-Oka Winery Bijou Noir.”
I am often asked a question: “What kind of wine do you like?” While I am a real wine lover and enjoy all kinds of wines, I am particularly attracted to unique wines that can only be produced locally. The wine I introduce this time is also a wine unique to Japan.

It is Japan’s original grape variety, produced in Japan via a crossing. The variety was developed by Yamanashi Agriculture Department Fruit Tree Experiment Station and is a crossing of Yamanashi No. 27 (Koshu x Merlot) and French variety, Malbec. It was officially registered in 2006 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. The variety is known to be suitable for our climate as it ripens quickly and therefore is less susceptible to the typical extreme weather conditions of Japan, such as autumn rain and typhoons.

Bijou Noir is still little known as it is a new variety. I think it has potential to be loved by many consumers in Japan. The best thing of all, it has a beautiful name, Bijou Noir. In French, it means “black jewelry” because when ripened, it shines bright like a real black jewel stone.

For example, if we take a look at the Bijou Noir 2017, which I introduce this time, we can see that it has a jewel-like glowing deep ruby color. It has a dominant aroma of black fruits, such as ripe blackberries and plums, and is accentuated by spicy notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. It also has a floral nuance in the form of lavender and earthy characters of brown mushrooms and soil. Personally, I feel a character similar to a wine made from a variety called “Gamay” in Beaujolais in France.

The palate is juicy, refreshing and fruity with pleasantly sour acidity. Moderately ripe and dry tannin creates a drying sensation in your mouth and gives a firm texture to the wine. The finish is a long-lasting sweet spice and sweet potato-like sweetness. The overall style of the wine is “rustic” in a good sense and evocative, conjuring up the image of a beautiful pastoral landscape in Yamanashi prefecture surrounded by abundant nature. Wines made under well-controlled conditions in modern facilities are good, but wines, like the Bijou Noir, that make us feel that they are part of nature and express their terroir are also great.

I am a sommelier and believe each one has their own way of enjoying wine. Of course, drinking temperature-controlled wine from glass is good, but drinking wine with colleagues or friends over grilled chicken on skewers is also a great way to enjoy wine, and the Bijou Noir is also perfect for such an occasion. As the weather gets warmer, it might be nice to drink it slightly chilled to make it more juicy. The wine is still little known, but has an attractive unique style and makes us realize again that Japanese wines are versatile. I want all of you - whether you have never tasted it before or you have not tasted it for a while - to enjoy the wine while having a good time with your family!
