Hi, everyone! It’s Wataru, sommelier and Suntory Wine Brand Ambassador.
Entering June, we now feel the first breath of summer. It was also June when I first went to France. I visited Europe for the first time, carrying a big backpack, aiming to be a sommelier. I, who was 24 years old back then, knew nothing about wine, headed straight to Bordeaux.

Just like now, the weather at the time was brilliant and fine with a cloudless blue sky. I remember drinking a crisp and refreshing wine made from locally grown sauvignon blanc grapes from an unlabeled carafe, while eating locally caught fresh oysters and a shrimp cocktail at a seaside restaurant in Arcachon facing the Atlantic Ocean, envisioning myself as a sommelier and thinking what sommelier I wanted to be.

Every time I drink the Japan Premium Tsugaru Sauvignon Blanc, its natural, amiable, crispy and fresh taste reminds me of the wine I had at the seaside restaurant and what I felt at the time.

Unlike New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc which is glaring and has a rich aroma of various herbs and passion fruits, the Tsugaru Sauvignon Blanc has a characteristic style with an affable, food-friendly taste, similar to those that have long been enjoyed by locals in Bordeaux. It has lemony fresh sourness that highlights the taste of seafood and stands out above all other flavors. The aroma of lime and grapefruits stimulates the appetite. The cool climate of Tsugaru, located north of Japan, further accentuates the freshness. If you are curious, feel free to read my other article I wrote about my visit to Tsugaru last year.

Japan has a climate of high-temperatures and high-humidity which is less suitable, compared to Europe and other new world countries, for growing grapes for wine. In addition, Japanese grape producers face various problems such as typhoons during the harvesting season. Local grape producers’ relentless efforts and passion make it possible to produce grapes of high quality. They bring these grapes to a brewery team for them to create the best wine of the year.

As a sommelier, I do not grow grapes or make wine. But I can tell you readers the background and story behind wine making. Sommeliers are a bridge between wine makers and consumers.

In June, seven years ago, I went to Europe to become a sommelier. To communicate stories of wine and have you experience the special sense of happiness that only wine gives, I will work hard to be an ideal sommelier. To me, the Tsugaru Sauvignon Blanc is a wine that reminds me of myself who was aspiring to become a great sommelier.

The 2019 Tsugaru Sauvignon Blanc has been unveiled. This is a vintage wine blessed with great weather during the harvesting season. This sauvignon blanc that has won gold in Japan wine contest represents Japan. I hope all of you can enjoy it!

Pale transparent silvery lemon yellow.
The flavor is aromatic and fresh.
The aroma of lime juice and grapefruit skin stands out above all other aromas. Fresh mineral notes, reminiscent of wet stone, and an aroma of lightly squashed lemon grass create a nice accent to the wine.
A light and refreshing attack. Lemony fresh sourness flows straight inside the mouth. Lingering bitterness tightens the overall palate. It’s a wine with a compact taste.
